Preaching: Proclamation for liberation

Preaching is not a random reality. We believe that preaching is an event, a complex one where a lot is at stake. Obviously, Jesus was a preacher, but what exactly is preaching ? And why is it meaningful ?

The title of the course suggests that preaching could have something to do with “liberation”- - but liberation from whom or from what ? And what is on the proclamation side of the event ? We will try to unpack what preaching is all about, looking at what precedes this event, what it is aiming at, what underpins it, as well as the type of framing in which it takes place.

The theologian Paul Tillich used to say something of the pastor that could well be applied to the preacher; she/he is the one who “shakes up the world of finite objects in his own way”. Indeed, the preacher extends the world of the visible and somehow, takes part in a restructuring of reality. He/she is giving unity and coherence to the visible reality, having recourse to the invisible, or to what is not always immediately audible for all; the Word of God.

The course aims at helping us understand and appreciate the role of the preacher that we —to some extent, are all called to be. It aims at helping us sharpen our world view; —our knowledge of who we are, and knowledge of God— so as to find the right posture and actively engage in our world.

Vera Ezumah, has a heart for worship; a precious means to seek God’s presence. Born in Nigeria, she was brought up in France where she was first academically trained in Paris in linguistics and civilization studies. While studying in her first year of a PhD program at Columbia University in New York City, Vera decided to engage more in music. (Among other things) Vera was a singer when she started to discern God’s call-- first to study the Word, and then for ministry. She was then trained to be a pastor and started a ministry in the French United Protestant Church. Circumstances then brought her to settle in England where she is now contemplating ministering within the Anglican Church. Throughout her journey she has developed a passion for the Word of God, which is for her a refreshening well, a mirror, a place to dig treasures to share; material to structure our perspectives and inform our knowledge of God, of ourselves and of the world. Vera loves to dive into the Word with others.
